Everyday Sweden – the right to roam, red days, Swish and the siren on certain Mondays

You may walk in a stranger's forest, someone will soon ask you to Swish, and four times a year a siren sounds across the country at three in the afternoon. Nobody explains any of it when you arrive. Here is how everyday Sweden works, and what the rules behind it say.

Much of daily life in Sweden is never written on a sign. Some of it is custom; a surprising amount rests on rules. This part covers what newcomers ask about once they have a home (part 13): where you may go, when things shut, how you pay, and what to do if the siren sounds for real.
Allemansrätten: open land, with limits
Allemansrätten (the right of public access) lets you move through and use land you do not own. It is not a law, and no law defines it exactly, according to Naturvårdsverket (the environmental protection agency). It is, however, written into one of Sweden's four fundamental laws: Chapter 2, Section 15 of regeringsformen (the Instrument of Government).
Berries are the classic case. They belong to the landowner while on the bush, but anyone may pick them, and once picked they belong to the picker – reasoning from Högsta domstolen (the Supreme Court) in the vitlav case, NJA 1986 s. 637. Protected species are the exception.
| Can I… | Answer, according to Naturvårdsverket |
|---|---|
| Pick wild berries? | Yes, unless the species is protected |
| Pick spruce shoots (granskott)? | No – ask the landowner first |
| Pick mistletoe, even berries on the ground? | No – protected across Sweden, with some exceptions (Sections 8 and 12, species protection ordinance) |
| Cycle in the forest and on private roads? | Yes, but not on house plots, plantings, gardens, nurseries or easily damaged land such as fields with growing crops |
| Ride an e-bike on someone else's land? | Only with the landowner's consent – the right covers travel without a motor |
| Pitch a tent near a house? | Keep well away – there is no fixed distance, and camping calls for more distance than passing by |

The hemfridszon (domestic privacy zone) around a house has no fixed measurement; it depends on terrain, vegetation and visible boundaries such as fences or hedges. If you come from Norway or Scotland, the idea will feel familiar: Norway put most of its rules into law in 1957, and Scotland has had a statutory right since 2003. Denmark does not consider itself to have one.
Red days, midsummer and your first holiday year
Public holidays – röda dagar (red days) – are set by the Public Holidays Act (lagen om allmänna helgdagar, 1989:253): every Sunday, plus New Year's Day, trettondedag jul (Epiphany), 1 May, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day, the National Day, Midsummer Day, All Saints' Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The National Day on 6 June only became one in 2005; before that it was a flag day.
Two holidays always fall on a Saturday: Midsummer Day on the Saturday between 20 and 26 June, and All Saints' Day on the Saturday between 31 October and 6 November.
| Red day | Date in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Good Friday | 3 April |
| Easter Monday | 6 April |
| Ascension Day | 14 May |
| National Day | 6 June |
| Midsummer Day | Saturday 20 June |
| All Saints' Day | Saturday 31 October |
| Christmas Day | 25 December |
| Boxing Day | 26 December |

Leave is law too. Under semesterlagen (the Annual Leave Act, 1977:480), employees have the right to 25 days of annual leave per leave year – but if your job starts after 31 August, only five days that year.
Fika, lagom and parental leave for both parents
Two words arrive early. Fika means a coffee break, often with something sweet, and it is an easy way to meet colleagues. Lagom, roughly "just the right amount", describes a taste for balance over excess.
What is written down is how parents share leave. According to Försäkringskassan (the Swedish Social Insurance Agency), parents share 480 days of föräldrapenning (parental benefit) per child, and part of it is reserved for each parent. Part 9 explains how you qualify.
| Parental benefit | Rule |
|---|---|
| Days per child | 480 – 390 based on income, 90 at the minimum level |
| Minimum level | 180 kronor a day, regardless of income |
| Reserved for each parent | 90 days at the income-based level (children born 2016 or later) |
| Earliest start | 60 days before the expected birth |
| The other parent's "10 days" | 10 days off with benefit around the birth, usable until day 60 after the baby comes home |
| Application deadline | No later than 90 days after the first day at home with the child |

Cashless – but not cash-free
Sooner or later someone will ask you to Swish. To send money you need the Swish app and Mobile BankID from your bank; without BankID you can only receive. According to Swedbank, a foreign mobile number can be connected there – check your own bank's terms, and see part 4 for the route to BankID.
Cash still has legal protection under Section 13 of the Payment Services Ordinance (förordningen om betaltjänster, 2010:1008), according to Sveriges riksbank (the central bank). In practice, the system has wobbled.
| Cash in Sweden | What the Riksbank reports |
|---|---|
| Legal ceiling, cash withdrawal | At most 0.3 % of the population more than 25 km from a withdrawal point |
| Legal ceiling, business deposits | At most 1.22 % more than 25 km from a deposit point |
| Outcome 2025 | Banks met the 25 km requirement for 99.7 % of the population |
| Disruption, May–September 2025 | At times up to 30 % of Bankomat's machines out of order |
| ICA shops, December 2025 | Just under 41 % of the withdrawal points banks count – only for ICA Banken or Swedbank customers |

Dark winters and vitamin D
Livsmedelsverket (the food agency) recommends 10 micrograms (400 IU) of vitamin D a day for adults aged 18–74, and 20 micrograms from age 75 or with little or no sun exposure. In June and July, a quarter of an hour of sun in a T-shirt and shorts a few times a week can be enough for people with light skin. Serious deficiency is very unusual in Sweden.
Crisis preparedness: sirens, VMA and the numbers to know
Since 1 January 2026, the agency formerly known as MSB is called Myndigheten för civilt försvar, MCF (the civil defence agency). Its brochure Om krisen eller kriget kommer (if crisis or war comes) went on paper to every household in autumn 2024 and exists in several other languages, easy-to-read Swedish, braille and sign language.
The outdoor warning system, Hesa Fredrik, is tested at 15:00 on the first non-holiday Monday of March, June, September and December, with the all-clear at 15:05. The real warning, Viktigt meddelande (important message), is 7 seconds of sound and 14 seconds of silence, repeated 6 times over 2 minutes. If you hear it outside a test, go indoors, close doors, windows and, if possible, ventilation, and listen to Sveriges Radio P4 or check TV and text-TV.
An official VMA – viktigt meddelande till allmänheten (important public announcement) – is always broadcast on radio and TV and repeated after 5–10 minutes. Krisinformation, the joint crisis website of Swedish authorities, publishes confirmed information in Swedish and English.
| Number | When to call |
|---|---|
| 112 | Emergencies only – acute danger or a crime in progress; free, answered by SOS Alarm in Swedish and English |
| 113 13 | Information about serious accidents and crises |
| 114 14 | Police, non-urgent matters (from abroad: +46 77 114 14 00) |
| 1177 | Healthcare advice, day and night |
| 010-456 6700 | Giftinformationscentralen (poisons information), acute poisoning, day and night |
