How to read the figures
- Population is the latest official figure from Statistics Sweden (SCB).
- The crime rate is: offences reported to the police per 1,000 residents, 2025, from Brå, the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention. National rate: Sweden 135.8.
- Offences are counted where they were committed, so municipalities with large city centres, shopping areas or transport hubs also record offences involving commuters and visitors. Reported crime also reflects how readily people report.
- Compare cities within Sweden only: every country defines and records crime differently.
- The figure is not your personal risk: offences are counted where they happen, so city centres with many commuters and visitors record higher rates.

Stockholm is Sweden's capital and largest municipality, and the Swedish parliament sits in the city centre. Universities include Stockholm University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden's largest institution for technical education and research.

Gothenburg (Göteborg)

Gothenburg, at the mouth of the Göta River, is Sweden's second-largest municipality and home to the Port of Gothenburg, Scandinavia's largest port. The University of Gothenburg and the headquarters of the Volvo Group are in the city.

Malmö
Skåne County (Skåne län) · 367,924 residents on 31 December 2025.
Malmö, Sweden's third-largest municipality, lies on the Öresund Strait, and Copenhagen is 30–40 minutes away by train across the Öresund Bridge. The city is home to Malmö University, founded in 1998, and established industries include life sciences, cleantech, food technology and gaming.

Uppsala

Uppsala is Sweden's fourth-largest municipality and home to Uppsala University, founded in 1477 as Scandinavia's first university and now with about 50,000 students. The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) has one of its main campuses in Uppsala.

Linköping

Linköping, in Östergötland, is home to Linköping University's main campus and to Linköping University Hospital. Saab has its largest site in the city, and companies such as Ericsson, IFS, Sectra and Cloetta also have offices there.

Västerås

Västerås, about 100 km west of Stockholm on Lake Mälaren, hosts a campus of Mälardalen University. Multinational companies such as ABB, which runs its Swedish corporate research centre there, Amazon and Westinghouse are major employers.

Örebro

Örebro, about 200 km from Stockholm and 300 km from Gothenburg and Oslo, describes itself as a natural logistics centre for Scandinavia. It is home to Örebro University and Örebro University Hospital, and has its own airport.

Helsingborg
Skåne County (Skåne län) · 152,776 residents on 31 December 2025.
Helsingborg is a port city in the Öresund region with a 20-minute ferry crossing to Helsingør in Denmark; its port is one of Sweden's largest ferry ports and a container specialist. Lund University has a campus in the city.

Jönköping

Jönköping, on the shore of Lake Vättern, is Sweden's ninth-largest municipality and describes its logistics location as one of the best in the Nordic region. It is home to Jönköping University and the Elmia exhibition centre, one of the largest in the Nordic countries.

Norrköping

Norrköping, on the Motala River in Östergötland, developed as an industrial centre from the 17th century, and its restored mill district now houses Linköping University's Campus Norrköping. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), a government agency, has offices in the city.

Umeå

Umeå, northern Sweden's largest urban community, is home to Umeå University, inaugurated in 1965, with over 43,700 students. The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences has one of its principal sites in Umeå, and the city hosts the University Hospital of Umeå.

Lund

Lund is home to Lund University, founded in 1666, which has about 46,000 students across campuses in Lund, Helsingborg, Malmö and Ljungbyhed. The national MAX IV X-ray laboratory, hosted by Lund University, operates here, and the European Spallation Source is being built next door.

Borås

Borås, in south-western Sweden, is known for its long textile history. The University of Borås, with about 19,000 students, runs the Swedish School of Textiles in the Textile Fashion Center, a hub for education, companies and incubators.

Huddinge

Huddinge is a municipality in the Stockholm region with two of the region's designated urban centres, Flemingsberg and Kungens kurva–Skärholmen. Flemingsberg has one of Sweden's larger university campuses, including Karolinska Institutet's Campus Flemingsberg.

Nacka

Nacka is a municipality in the Stockholm region where Region Stockholm is extending the metro's Blue Line, with stations at Sickla, Järla and Nacka. On western Sicklaön, 11,300 new homes and 10,000 new workplaces are planned by 2035.

Eskilstuna

Eskilstuna, in the Mälardalen region, has a Mälardalen University campus in the city centre. Major employers include Volvo Construction Equipment, Eskilstuna Energi och Miljö and Outokumpu, and there are good connections to Stockholm, Västerås and Örebro.

Halmstad

Halmstad lies on the coast midway between Malmö and Gothenburg, each just over an hour away by fast train. Logistics, retail and construction employ the most people, and the city is home to Halmstad University.

Gävle

Gävle, on Sweden's east coast about two hours from Stockholm, has the largest container port on the Swedish east coast, serving the region's wood, steel and paper industries. It is home to the University of Gävle, with about 19,000 students.

Södertälje

Södertälje, in Stockholm County, is the main base of vehicle maker Scania, which employs about 15,000 people there. About 4,500 people work at AstraZeneca's Södertälje site, one of the world's largest pharmaceutical plants.

Haninge

Haninge, on Södertörn in Stockholm County, is one of the county's eight regional urban centres and has commuter trains to central Stockholm. It includes an archipelago of 4,262 islands and lies between the Stockholm Norvik port in Nynäshamn and central Stockholm.
