Cities in Italy
Last updated 25 September 2026
All 45 cities in Italy with more than 100,000 residents: the official population, a short profile and the crime rate recorded by the police, set against the rate for Italy.
Municipalities (comuni) with at least 100,000 residents on 1 January 2026 (ISTAT provisional estimate).
How to read the figures
- Population is the latest official figure from ISTAT, the Italian National Institute of Statistics.
- The crime rate is: offences reported by the police per 1,000 residents, 2024, from ISTAT (offences reported by the police to the judicial authorities). National rate: Italy 40.7.
- ISTAT publishes a rate for the municipality itself for 44 of the 45 cities; for Giugliano in Campania only the figure for the Metropolitan City of Naples exists. 2024 is the latest year ISTAT has published. Offences are counted where they happened, so cities with many commuters and visitors show higher rates.
- Compare cities within Italy only: every country defines and records crime differently.
- The figure is not your personal risk: offences are counted where they happen, so city centres with many commuters and visitors record higher rates.
