All 43 cities in France with more than 100,000 residents: the official population, a short profile and the crime rate recorded by the police, set against the rate for France.
Communes with at least 100,000 residents in INSEE’s reference population (1 January 2023, in force from 1 January 2026), in metropolitan France and the overseas departments except Mayotte – plus Antibes Juan-les-Pins (77,637 residents), which we include as well.
How to read the figures
- Population is the latest official figure from INSEE, the French statistics office.
- The crime rate is: victims of physical violence per 1,000 residents, 2025, from SSMSI, the Interior Ministry’s statistical service. National rate: France 6.9.
- France publishes no single “all crime” figure by commune. The headline figure adds the two published physical-violence indicators (outside and within the family); the four published indicators are shown underneath. Figures are recorded where the offence took place.
- Compare cities within France only: every country defines and records crime differently.
- The figure is not your personal risk: offences are counted where they happen, so city centres with many commuters and visitors record higher rates.
